Five generations of the Alford family have been working the land here at Stoneywish since it was a dairy farm back in 1931. Today, the business still feels very much like a family affair, with a friendly, informal atmosphere. We are committed to preserving the beauty of this place which we love and to sharing the knowledge we have learned here. And now so many people also feel that Stoneywish is 'home', they have their own generations who have 'grown up' here. Their visits and yours help to protect this environment for the future.
Stoneywish Nature Reserve, is the inspiration and creation of the present owner, Michael Alford. Under his direction the landscape of the original farm has developed into a patchwork of beautiful wetlands and wilderness areas interspersed with meadows and native woodland. The walk takes you on a circular trip through the reserve, and back to the Shaker Smallholding where you can get a glimpse of the 'good life': free range piggies, organic veggies, ducks in an orchard, and a proper gypsy caravan! You can also learn about the fascinating world of the Shakers. A pause to visit the Emett Hut Museum and enjoy some of the quirky cartoons of Ditchling's most eccentric humourist, then back to the Visitor Centre and shop for an ice cream and a cool drink!
